JMP V10 ROM for Micromax A110 Review

JMP V10 ROM for Micromax A110 Review

Rapidly developing, still.
Recently, I mentioned in another post that my most favourite ROM for Micromax A110 is SUVI V6 Jupiter. Looks like I might have to reconsider it, thanks to some recent advancements in the JMP ROM series, thanks to the new and enthusiastic developer 'DanceOff' from New Delhi. While the original developer of the series, Mr. Jiggar Pattani has declared that he would not continue developing for A110 further, DanceOff is handling things pretty well, as evident from the recent V10 ROM release.

JMP V10 is really neatly done, and one especially surprising feature about the ROM is that, it's all total around 120 MB only! Well, some of the much used google apps such as Gmail, Google Now etc are not installed by default, but there is a decent separate Google apps patch. Or else you can simply download them from Google Play.

The main plus points of JMP V10 are as follows:

The device is still alive, thanks!
1. Extra modifications: The usual array of power-ups and tweaks has been already implemented, such as dodexing and ziplining apks, Bravia2 engine addition etc. However, for the more advanced users who are quite familiar with different ROMs, this is not going to make much difference since implementing these measure isn't really that hard. PimpMyROM can be actively used to enhance its features once it is installed. After coming from SUVI V6 however, I didn't notice much of any difference in flexibility. In fact, I'd give SUVI the upper hand so far as speed is concerned.

2. Extra add-ons: Optional add-ons have been added in the XDA main development page for the ROM. For example, the laggy UI patch fixes most UI related flexibility issues. There are also add-ons for making the device useful in circles such as Germany and Pakistan. The Xperia launcher add-on is nice one for those who'd like to try Sony's customized launcher (although I myself still prefer old-school LauncherPro).

3. Smoothness: Excluding SUVI and official V3 ROM, I guess there's no other ROM that's smoother than JMP.

4. Mid-end gaming support: While Shadowgunner can't be expected to run without glitches (you'd better try your luck with A110 Gaming MOD HERE), massive games such as FrontLine Commando, Raging Thunder 2, FL Commando D-Day expansion etc run very smoothly on it. But once again, since I migrated from SUVI V6, I did not notice much of any difference.

5. Better audio: Yeah, this is true. While actual audio without speakers is pretty much the same, the audio quality on headphones has really been improved. It even surpassses SUVI series (which I'd usually give credit for catering the best audio).

6. In-built TV Out: This is a major advantage for users of this ROM. TV out is natively supported out of the box.

7. New icon set: Doesn't do much, but still adds to the splendour of your device.

AnySoft keyboard is a great addition
8. AnySoft Keyboard: This is the second big plus point for this ROM. The native google keyboard has been replaced with AnySoft, with lean dark theme. This is a major advancement especially to be realized by heavy texters.

9. Faster bootup: The ROM, as I saw, has some features derived from Micromax Canvas A116 HD, including the boot animation. It also has the fastest bootup for any ROM I've seen on A110, even without 'quick poweron' feature enabled.

10. Android 4.1.2: It's based on 4.1.2, and therefore is stabler compared to 4.1.1 releases. However, speed and flexibility issues regarding 4.1.2 haunt this version.

11. Battery backup: I guess, theoretically, it would be slightly better than SUVI series. That makes it one of the most battery-efficient ROMs ever. But don't take my word on that, much more data is required to analyze that.

12. Rapid development: We can expect to see increasing levels of development since JMP has replaced SUVI as the most rapidly developing ROM series. You can also join the conversation and chances are your voice will be heard in the process.

On the other hand, there are a few glitches with this ROM as well. Some of these are:

1. Laggy high-end gaming: Well, unless you try the gaming ROM itself, it's pretty much similar everywhere. Still, compared to SUVI V6 and Micromax V3, JMP is slightly laggier in terms of high-end gaming.

2. Not much difference: Yeah, internally there isn't very much difference when you compare it to previous versions such as JMP V6. But bug fixes and stability improvements have definitely made it better.

3. Laggy UI: This is a sad reality. However, there is already a patch there in the main development page for this series, and it works nicely. Or else, you can simply switch off Window animations, lock the launcher in memory using PimpMyROM and add a few related modifications to make it better.

4. Camera still 8 MP: This is surprising. The developers could have based the release on Mobistel ROM series, because the camera is really better there. And I'm saying from experience. I've tried photography primarily with this device for many days, and have thousands of shots taken from both the 12 MP Mobistel camera as well as the default 8 MP official camera (on different ROMs, definitely). And to be honest, while my judgement often got clouded, I finally realized that 12 MP camera introduced by Mobistel is really better. While the sharpness is almost the same, and so is the quality, the size of 12 MP shots simply beats that of 8 MP shots. Additionally, since larger images means more data, and more data means more details we get better pictures using the 12 MP camera.

Other things are more or less the same. FM Radio, 3D music etc work nicely. About the GPS, it's nearly the as with other ROMs. I believe this device itself doesn't support GPS well, that causes most of the problems we face regarding it. But using Engineer Mode, you can just go to location-based settings and solve the problem (to an extent) yourself. Especially if you have a 3G connection, enabling Roaming on Location-engineer mode helps much.

Notification area and other features
are almost the same
A word of caution: If you're going to install this ROM, be sure to backup all your apps and settings using Titanium backup and restore first. Also, be sure to take a CWM backup of your entire ROM before flashing this new one. I've found that on numerous devices, including mine, the ROM doesn't recognize your SIM cards after installation. The trick is simply to backup your existing ROM's IMEI settings using MobileUncle tools (a free download from Playstore), and then restoring the settings after installing the new ROM, this solves the issue.

The recently released Thunderzap kernel that overclocks your device to 1.4 GHz speed is bundled with the ICS release of this ROM. So, naturally the decision is yours, whether you want a more upgraded system or a faster one. I'd personally stick to the JB release however.

The flashing procedure is easy and nearly the same as ever. Just download the ROM FROM HERE and then, to quote DanceOff himself,

"Download JMP™ ROM .zip File
Put into External/Internal SD Card
Go To CMW Recovery
Wipe Data/Factory Reset And Wipe Partition
From Advance Menu Do Dalvik Catch Clear
From Advance Menu Do Battery State Clear
Go in Mount And Storage select FORMAT SYSTEM
Select Install From SD and Select File And Click YES
Reboot Your System
Done".

That's thus not very hard.
