Uberwriter, the distraction-free editor

For many of us, concentrating on what we write becomes a serious issue. Although Windows users are usually bugged more by this, even us Linux guys aren't entirely free from the attack of attention-seeking dialog boxes. For example, a buddy might start messaging you on pidgin, a random email might grab your attention for a few minutes, or just a simple Update dialog might distract you for the moment.

When you are into some serious writing, ranging from Journal entires to some serious technical article, you certainly need to free your mind from such distractions. And there is, thankfully, no shortage of such distraction-free editors on the Linux platform. Ranging from Marave fo FocusWriter and PyRoom, you have a wide, wide range of choices. But recently, a quite new editor grabbed my attention, UberWriter.

Created by Wolf, a tech student from Switzerland (iirc) and most certainly a cool developer, this editor is certainly one of the best I have ever used, as a great productivity enhancer. And now that I am using it, I guess I will continue to stick to it for many, many, many months. What especially is so special about this little yet beautiful software is that, it is just about writing your thing without any fuss, literally. Simply invoke your launcher, find UberWriter, hit F11 to make it fullscreen and start typing. The main features which distinguish UberWriter from the rest of the gang are as follows:

1. Beautiful and intuitive interface: While Marave or FocusWriter can easily be customized to give a similar experience, Uberwriter just rocks when it comes to providing a beautiful interface right from the start. Just install it and start it, you are greeted with a eye-cooling black-on-whitish screen, where you just go on typing. Out of the box, this is the best experience I ever had for a distraction-free editor.
2. Secondly, I must say that UberWriter automatically supports spell-checking and some basic-to-intermediate Word processor features. Here again, while many other similar programs can be customized to make it happen, the Out-of-the-box experience provided to the user by UberWriter is just awesome.
3. The Focus Mode of UberWriter is just great. Without much hassle, the editor highlights your most recent line, and simply faints away the previous ones. This is intelligently coded, I must say. Whenever you finish a line and end it with a full-stop, and begin a new line next, the previous line seems faded. This helps you focus on your current line. And again, philosophically speaking, you must focus on the present, to achieve a better future. :)
4. There are just two themes, but they serve the purpose well. Without much customization, the Light Mode and Dark Mode provide you a soothing experience, and makes typing a breeze.
5. Finally, you can easily export your work as PDF, ODT, HTML or even as more advanced LaTex export formats easily, from the application itself. This is the beauty of UberWriter. Thus, writer a new chapter for your novel or making an article for your scientific blog is a charm, when UberWriter is right on your side.

Fire up your terminal with Ctrl+Alt+T, and copy-paste this command:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:w-vollprecht/ppa; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install uberwriter

and hit enter. Uberwriter will be installed within a minute.
